STUDIO JENCQUEL

CREATED IN 2011, STUDIO JENCQUEL IS AN INTERNATIONAL BOUTIQUE DESIGN STUDIO SET IN UBUD, INDONESIA’S ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL CAPITAL. IN THIS UNISQUE SPACE, STUDIO OWNER MAXIMILIAN JENCQUEL HAS EXPANDED ON HIS VARIED CULTURAL INFLUENCES FROM EUROPE, NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA, AND SOUTHEAST ASIA TO FOCUS ON HARMONIOUS COMPOSITION THROUGH ARCHITECTURE, FURNITURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN.

The studio was originally built as a car park. It was turned into a woodworking shop for two years, and in 2015, was entirely transformed. It is now a 70-square-meter open space with a 360-degree view of the surrounding nature. It looks like a luminous artist’s studio, complete with steel, glass and wood components, and a polished concrete floor. The conference table in the center, made from reclaimed ironwood and a single slab of Burmese rosewood, took over one month to design and manufacture. Arranged around the meeting table are several solid ironwood stools and chairs—recycled from a bridge dismantled in Borneo—all original Studio Jencquel designs. To preserve a sense of harmony between the physical and social elements of the world around us, Studio Jencquel delves deeply into every component of the creative process, each one serving a purpose and telling a unique story. By drawing on the principles of slow design and utilizing an adaptive, sustainable design approach, Studio Jencquel seeks a richness of meaning and unique emotional connection with the material and physical structures.
