FRANÇOIS CHAMPSAUR

AFTER STUDYING FINE ARTS IN MARSEILLE AND GRADUATING FROM THE DECORATIVE ARTS SCHOOL IN PARIS (ENSAD), FRANÇOIS CHAMPSAUR FOUNDED HIS OWN INTERIOR DESIGN COMPANY IN 1996. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, HE APPROACHED HIS INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECTS IN THE SAME WAY AS HIS FURNITURE MAKING, WITH THE DESIRE TO BUILD SPACES AND VOLUMES FULL OF MEANING, IN LINE WITH TODAY’S WAY OF LIFE.

A taste for harmony between interior and exterior, seeking a way of life close to nature, roots warmed by the Mediterranean sun, his creations show a remarkable tension between the full picture and the detail. The poetry of a seat, the shadows beneath the pergola, the contrast of a touch of sunny yellow on a wooden wall: his spaces, like his furniture, are inhabited by their own spirit. He is behind the transformation of luxury hotels such as the Hotel Manapany in Saint Barthélémy, the Royal Evian on the shores of Lake Geneva, the Hotel Bailli de Suffren in Rayol-Canadel, the Hotel Vernet, the Métropolitan, and the Hotel du Ministère in Paris, as well as many private homes and art collectors’ homes. From small spaces — like the Café Ineko, rue des Gravilliers — to XXL projects, like the future hotel project of Ian Shrager in Madrid, with the architect John Pawson, his work seeks to reveal a greater osmosis between buildings and people. «Back in the time when I was studying Fine Arts, the work of designers like Sottsass or Branzi represented a counterculture. Today, the counterculture is ecology. Chefs, who work with the fruit of the earth, are a step ahead of us. Our profession has not yet had a revolution.» Today, he likes to say that he is a fan of "the imperfect" to explain his philosophy largely inspired by simplicity and the intelligent craftsmanship of vernacular architecture. He believes in a new way of thinking and building and wants to give meaning to space and accompany the change by moving away from industrial design, staying loyal to what he has always loved: nature, light, local materials, pure lines.

DESIGN PARADE TOULON

This week will see the Design Parade Toulon, the 4th International Festival of Interior Design which will be held from 27-30 June, 2019. This year the president will be the guest of honour François Champsaur, and the main exhibition of this edition, which will be held at the heart of the former bishopric of Toulon, will question the relationship between mankind and nature. «The consumer society to which we all contribute, brought to a head by the progress of the thermo-industrial era, is exhausting our terrestrial and human resources. It is time to rethink our manner of creation, production and thinking to reconcile with nature and our own nature», states François Champsaur.

The different exhibitions of the Design Parade Toulon will be open to the public until 24 November 2019.
